A Skull Every So Often

Hey, I'm Ryan (RustyEight), and I draw skulls. Well, I'm learning how to anyway. Instead of just doing this by myself, I want to share my progress with you. So follow me, we'll have a blast.

Brandon Day - Invocation Clothing

For those of you involved in the art industry, you know how hard it is to preserve your work… especially if its on the internet. People will take it, use it, sell it, all without credit or payment to the creator. Some people don’t realize what they are doing is wrong.

Brandon Day of Invocation Clothing, from Pikeville, KY isn’t one of those people.

He has been caught stealing designs from several artists and selling them as his own… both through his clothing line and freelance to bands. He’s also been known to steal the code straight off other websites and claim it as his own as well.

The evidence can be found at:

Also, check out Fuck You Ripper… a sweet tumblr account set up to expose people like this and black list them.

Don’t bother trying to find the designs he’s stolen anywhere. He’s very good at deleting them as soon as he’s found out. He’s deleted all reference to them from his Tumblr, deleted his Twitter and Facebook accounts, and even took down his online store (previously at http://invocation.bigcartel.com/ ) I’m sure some of you could wrangle up some Google kung fu and find them.

Skull 14?:
Haven’t really had time to do a full out skull, but I made a little doodle while brainstorming some code today. Thought it was sort of nifty and really represents the first time I’ve tried an ink and paper approach. No reference, just a doodle.
Its bad, I know. But it’s my blog. So eat it.

Moving Forward

I’m pretty surprised by the type of progress I’ve made on these past few skulls.  Although still not where I want to be, I’m having more fun with the design of them. I still have some anatomy issues, but I’m working on those piece by piece.

So I think I’m gonna start going through my old skull illy’s and re-illustrate some of them. It’ll be fun to compare then to now I think.

Skull 13#
Just a quickie while I was on lunch break at work. Simple idea for this one. Instead of carving a shape into the skull, I’m gonna put it inside a shape. It has a similar nose to the last one, and the line weight is similar too. Again, not happy with the “gums” but I feel like I’m getting closer. Texture is just for fun.
The last one came out a lot better… but I also spent more time on it.

Skull #12:
This guy might look sort of familiar… in fact I may be called out on it. Why? Because I’m biting the style of my good friend and artist KillerNapkins.
So why would I copy another artists style… and blatantly admit it? Because I’m not doing it to sell to clients, or to give clients a taste of what I can do. If a client asked me to do something similar to this for them, I’d direct them to KN.
What am I gaining from this then? I’m learning not HOW he does it, but WHY he does it. Why does he make the shading choices he does? Why does he cut giant shapes into things? It’s the why that will help me create my own sense of style and direction.
Now down to nuts and bolts. I tried REALLY hard on the nose here. All my other attempts have felt flat. I feel like I’m finally happy with the way one came out, and now I understand why. I’m getting more comfortable playing around with the shape of the skull itself… breaking away from literal anatomy and moving towards a more stylized one.
I love the teeth here… but the “gums” area is still really rocky for me. I think I may go study dentures. Not sure where else to go as a resource.

Wow, 10 months since my last skull huh? Time flies. Well I had an idea based off a tapestry at my drummer’s house. Been sitting on the idea for a while. Finally had some time to execute it. Here’s the result. Enjoy :)

My Other Blog

Since this one is kind of stagnant until I get my internet situation all set at home, you should follow my other blog, RustyEight’s Ramblings. I’m using it to sort of explore a bunch of topics I’m passionate about.

So what happened to this?

Long story short, I moved. I don’t have the internet at my apartment right now… and I don’t have time to draw skulls at work anymore.

I’ll get back to it, I swear.

Skull #10:
So my wrist is better. Went back to a human skull for this one. Drawing animal skulls really helped me get the feeling of teeth down. Still having trouble with highlights though.
Not much more to say. Boom!

This is my wrist. Its in a brace. Why? Most pit. Anyway, this makes it very difficult to do a number of things… like wiping your ass (wiping lefty is weird), shifting gears in your car, holding things and typing.
It also makes it near impossible to draw skulls. So until this bad boy is healed enough to allow me to bend my wrist without excruciating pain, there won’t be any skulls. Hopefully I can get this all squared away soon.
